Karnataka boasts of some of the most amazing and scenic hill stations in India and one of them is Coorg. My hubby and I went to Coorg in monsoons and were spellbound by its beauty. Coorg is a home to some of the finest waterfalls located amidst dense forests and one such fall is Abbey falls. One thing I would like to tell you is that if you want to see Abbey falls in its full glory, then visit this place sometime between June to August. The flow of water in Abbey falls is very high during the monsoons because of the bountiful seasonal rainfall in Coorg and hence, the water plunges down the mountain slope at an enormously high speed.
Abbey Falls is located at a distance of 5.5 kms from Madikeri amidst the lush green private coffee plantations. We went by our car till the entrance gate of Coffee estate after which we walked down a bit to reach the falls. The road to the falls was narrow and slippery winding through the dense coffee and spices plantations. Trust me guys, the water falling from heights of somewhere around 70 ft was making such high thunderous roar upon hitting the rocks that we could hear it from the entrance itself.
Once we reached the falls, we were enthralled by the beauty of the cascade. The water was falling from great height, and was giving the illusion of milky white falls. There is also a suspension bridge across the falls which offers a very picturesque view of the falls from different angles and make it a perfect spot for taking photos. We even got wet once we walked on that bridge as the flow of water was enormous.
You can visit Abbey falls all the days of the week from 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM. Just be careful of the leeches in this area and wear shoes for a comfortable walk. Also, there are a few small shops at the entrance from where you can purchase snacks and coconut water.
Overall, I would say, the sound of gushing water and the surrounding mist and the flora offers a picturesque sight to its visitors and makes it a perfect place to visit during the monsoons.
